Nigeria: FG Seeks Global Understanding of Mobile Phone Hazard
Lagos — The Federal Government Wednesday said that large number of mobile phones, telecoms infrastructure and other electronic devices in the country have made it necessary for the government to investigate, understand and communicate potential public health impacts to Nigerians.
The Minister of Communication, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, said this at the first West African Electromagnetic Field Conference (EMF) organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
She said that was a step forward in government’s quest to formulate right policies in line with global standards on the possible health and environmental implications of mobile phones, telecoms infrastructure and other electronic devices.
The minister was represented by Mr. Okechukwu Itanyi.
The minister said government is aware of the confusion which has already been generated in Nigeria on the possible health impact of mobile phones and the need to educate the public.
She said that the government is mindful of the health condition of Nigerians and wants to get a position that Nigerians can use mobile phones without worry about its health implications.
Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC Dr. Eugene Juwah, in his remark said bringing experts from all over the world was to have useful deliberations and exchange knowledge on current findings on the electromagnetic field.
Juwah was represented by Miss Funmi Akiode, a Director in the commission.
